The Arcada Rock 'N Roll Cabaret Series
A Memorable Night of Rockin' Songs and Stories
An Arcada Exclusive: The Legacy of "The First Family of Southern Rock"
With Special Guests, the band ShanyTown
Starring members of the Lynyrd Skynyrd and Van Zant Family
And the Van Zant legacy continues as ShanyTown comes to the Arcada, sharing their own incredible music and the historic music that came before them. The evening will cover a variety of rockin', storytelling originals and legendary crowd favorites in a question and answer format with Ron. Along with the music, they will discuss the history of The Van Zant family, recalling important events in their life, including that fateful plane crash that changed the family, and music history, forever.
Anyone who truly knows rock music knows of the Van Zant family from Jacksonville, Florida. Known as the "First Family of Southern Rock," the Van Zants produced three major bands: Lynyrd Skynyrd, .38 Special, and the Johnny Van Zant Band. Now there is yet another band born into the "first family": Shanytown, also from the home town of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jacksonville, Florida.
Shanytown is comprised in part by Robbie Morris (Drums) and "Lil Ronnie" Morris (Lead vox/guitar)--the nephews of the late Ronnie Van Zant, and Donnie and Johnny Van Zant from Lynyrd Skynyrd and .38 Special. Robbie's and Ronnie's musical roots are deep-seeded in pure Southern Rock with the soul of the Van Zant legacy running through their veins. Although 'Lil Ronnie Morris visually resembles his uncle Ronnie, he has gone a step further with his music, building on his uncle's memory. He has created a musical experience that respectfully carries on the family tradition with ShanyTown. Robbie Morris, ShanyTown's internationally renowned drummer, began his professional career at the age of fourteen with his uncle Johnny, eventually establishing The "Johnny Van Zant Band". Together they made six albums and toured for years until Johnny joined Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Charles Moody, Duan Johnson and Kevin Williams make up the rest of this fabulous musical experience. They are some of the most respected and talented musicians in the South, with a stage presence as entertaining as the music itself. Together, the band carries a tradition forging a new path with their own style that captivates audiences and creates a party that only The Van Zant family knows how to do. ShanyTown incorporates the styles of classic rock, country and Southern rock, melding the genres into the band's own unique sound.

Bill Medley is a seminal figure in the history of American music. He is perhaps best known as half of the unmistakable duo, The Righteous Brothers. Their raw emotional rhythm and blues sound essentially created the genre “blue-eyed soul.” In the mid-1960s, the Righteous Brothers became a fixture on Top Forty radio with hits like “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin,” “Just Once in My Life,” “Unchained Melody,” and “(You’re My) Soul and Inspiration,” creating an ultra- dramatic take on Sixties pop romance.
For well close to five decades, Tower of Power has delivered the best in Rhythm and Blues music. But, as group co-founder Emilio Castillo says, they could have had a much different name.
“We were a Soul band called The Motowns.” he recalls. Rocco Prestia was the bass player, I was in there, and my brother was the drummer. I met Doc Kupka at the Alameda County Fair over the Fourth of July weekend back in 1968, and gave him an audition. He came in the band, and we eventually changed our name to the Tower of Power.” The reason for the band name change was that they had a specific goal in mind.
“We wanted to get into the Fillmore Auditorium and with a name like the Motowns, dressed in suits with razor cuts, we knew we’d never get in there. We grew our hair long, and started to be hippies, and changed our name. Doc then suggested to me that we should start writing our own songs. Our first song was ‘You’re Still A Young Man.” READ MORE...
